Are these the most SEXIST video games? Study reveals games with the least female dialogue

Daily Mail - Science & tech

While around half of gamers across the UK are female, a new study has revealed a huge divide when it comes to the amount of dialogue spoken by female characters. Shocking research of more than 13,000 video game characters has revealed that just 35 per cent of words are spoken by women. Kingdom Hearts 3D and King's Quest VI scored lowest of all, with just 6.7 and 6.4 per cent of female dialogue respectively. The research comes at a time when female gamers are largely targeted within the community, according to the team. 'Around half of gamers are female, but they experience a lot of abuse and exclusion,' said Dr Roberts of Cardiff University.

ChatGPT Needs to Get Way Better Before It Takes My Job

The rapid development of conversational AI, particularly ChatGPT, is both impressive and concerning. No one wants to worry about a bot taking their job(Opens in a new window). Employers weighing whether to adopt AI may want to think twice, though. After putting ChatGPT through its paces, we found that it's got a lot to learn. It served up vague and sometimes flat-out wrong information on topics PCMag staffers know well.

How the greatest Japanese RPGs of the '90s came to the West

Washington Post - Technology News

The transformation began with some of Square's most beloved 16-bit games like "Final Fantasy VI" and "Chrono Trigger." These localizations by Ted Woolsey were, if not particularly sophisticated, at least quirky and eclectic, leading him to become a bit of a legend among JRPG fans. For "Final Fantasy VII," however, Square moved on from Woolsey and brought in Michael Baskett -- a film-subtitling translator. Despite smashing genre sales records in the West and earning rave reviews, "Final Fantasy VII" was dragged down by a localization that, even at the time, felt woefully inadequate. Baskett's translation was clinical, sometimes unreadable, and literal to the point of hurting the narrative.

Artificial intelligence is helping old video games look like new

#artificialintelligence

The recent AI boom has had all sorts of weird and wonderful side effects as amateur tinkerers find ways to repurpose research from universities and tech companies. But one of the more unexpected applications has been in the world of video game mods. Fans have discovered that machine learning is the perfect tool to improve the graphics of classic games. The technique being used is known as "AI upscaling." In essence, you feed an algorithm a low-resolution image, and, based on training data it's seen, it spits out a version that looks the same but has more pixels in it.

Retro video games are just so tubular, dude

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

"Space Invaders" are among the games included on AtGames Legends Flashback Blast! In the box is a wireless controller and HDMI dongle to plug into a television. Today's video games may boast photorealistic graphics, surround sound and massively multiplayer matches, but many players still long for the days when games were, well, simpler. You know, when you didn't need to master 14 buttons just to beat a level or suffer from vertigo because of a dizzying virtual reality headset. If you've got a sentimental spot for bustling arcades of the early '80s – or sitting on a shag rug, sipping a glass of Tang, and playing Atari on the boob tube – then you'll be happy to know there are many ways to regain the glory of the "Golden Age of Gaming," in 2019.

Machine learning is rescuing old game textures in Zelda and Final Fantasy

#artificialintelligence

The first generation of 3D video games are ugly. I think they are ugly in a charming way, but many people disagree with even that. The truth is that the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, and Saturn were like the Atari and Intellivision for 3D graphics. While modern technology has easily surpasses those hardware limitations, new processes may have a way to make those old games look slightly better. And it all comes down to neural networks and machine learning. One of the big reasons a game like Final Fantasy VII looks so ugly today is because of its textures.

Check out how Sony's original 1994 PlayStation is being miniaturized and pre-loaded with classic games. Sony had already announced five games coming to the $99.99 console: "Final Fantasy VII," "Jumping Flash," "Ridge Racer Type 4," "Tekken 3" and "Wild Arms." The video game maker on Monday filled out that list with classic games such as "Metal Gear Solid," "Final Fantasy VII," "Grand Theft Auto" and "Twisted Metal." The plug-and-play system (out Dec. 3, available for pre-order), which is 45 percent smaller than the original PlayStation, comes with two controllers.

Sony announces PlayStation One Classic that comes pre-loaded with 20 games

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Sony has unveiled a shrunken version of its classic Playstation One video games console that comes pre-loaded with 20 classic titles. The £90 ($100) PlayStation One Classic is almost half the size of Sony's original 1994 console, making it small enough to hold in one hand. It is available for pre-order now ahead of its release on December 3 – exactly 24 years after the original release date for the console. Sony is following in the footsteps of fellow Japanese games-maker Nintendo, which has released miniature versions of two of its classic consoles in recent years. The nostalgic re-issues of the classic consoles have been hugely popular amongst Nintendo fans, with the most recent SNES Classic Mini has sold 5.28 million units worldwide since its launch in September 2017.
